GSA POSTS FINALIZED TELEWORK REGS

3/6/2007

Federal computer equipment will soon be finding its way into the homes of many federal employees. Last week the General Services Administration published final, government-wide regulations for establishing telework and alternative work site policies. The regulations allow agencies to provide employees with:

* Computer equipment, associated peripheral equipment (e.g. printer, copier, scanner, etc.) telecommunications and associated technical support for implementing and expanding telework

* Equipment that is no longer needed for its original purposes, such as when equipment is replaced during a refresh cycle

* Funding to install telephone lines and necessary equipment (along with monthly charges) at an employee’s private residence provided that safeguards against misuse exist and that service “is necessary for direct support of the agency’s mission

The regulations specify how agencies are to ensure that information is protected offsite and allow employees to use their personal computer and telephone equipment. When using personal equipment, GSA encourages employees and management to specify levels of responsibility for maintaining equipment. Agencies must also have control over work-related software. The regulations can be found here .
