Gayle Buske, founder of a Wisconsin-based virtual staffing company, said salaries range from $20,000 to $40,000 a year for virtual assistants. The independent contractors’ salaries vary by skill set and the number of projects they work.
After working in sales for three years, Melissa Amster left the brick and mortar business in August to create 123Staff LLC, a virtual staffing company based out of her Buffalo Grove home. Her company links professionals that want to work from home with employers.
“There are a lot of people looking to work from home or who are already working from home,? she said. “We will do all the matching from employees to employers.?
Though the company was formed only seven months ago, Amster said 50 job seekers have signed up for administrative, financial and legal assistance jobs. The firm charges 5 percent to 10 percent of its contractors’ salaries, depending on the project.
Buske created a similar virtual staffing company in Lodi, Wis., after placing an ad for writers while working on a magazine. Buske said after receiving more than 500 responses from the ad, she and her husband realized there was a niche market for marketing professionals’ skills.
Now, three years later, the company represents 15,000 independent contractors nationwide and has 350 clients, which vary from insurance firms to real estate to a religious candy distributor.
“Our average virtual assistant has between five and six client assignments that are generally ongoing,? Buske said. “We operate similarly to a bricks-and-mortar staff agency or temp agency? but without the costly bricks and mortar, she said.
