The state of Virginia is seeing growth come so fast that the roads literally can’t keep up. I’ve mentioned the Telework VA program before. It’s a response to this trend. Telecommuting or Telework is absolutely essential to northern and eastern Virginia’s continued economic growth. Complicating things is the already tight job market in the area which the ability to telework might also help manage.
One interesting thing is that the new word coming into play is “telework” not “telecommuting”.

The region is growing far faster than its roads can keep up, and telecommuting is fast becoming a necessity.
According to the 2000 Census, the Washington, D.C., area has the most teleworkers compared to the rest of the country. It is still a small percentage – 3.4 percent of the workforce.
Telecommuting, if implemented more widely, could have a major positive impact on the economy, said John McClain of the Center for Regional Analysis at George Mason University’s School of Public Policy.
“[Traffic congestion] erodes worker productivity,” McClain said, “and the kind of adaptations workers make to the commuting problem has eroded quality of life — people leaving home at 4:30 a.m. to get to work, and so forth.”
