This is a perfect example of why more parents are seeking to work at home. This report comes from the UK, but the economics are similar in the US.
Assuming husband and wife earn the same amount of money, then 33% of total household income consumes two-thirds or 66% of the income from one the workers! Don’t you think the other third is consumed by taxes, commuting, wardrobe expense and eating out at work?
If fact there may be no immediate economic benefits at all to the arrangement though there may be long term benefits socially and financially (retirement savings for instance, but many of those long term benefits are still maintained if one telecommutes for an established firm). Do those benefits outweigh the benefits of raising one’s own children? Many think “no” and that’s why they’re working at home!
Funny, instead of the article using the data to demonstrate why parents are choosing to work from home so young children can bond with them, the article quotes people who want to raise everyone’s taxes so that the parents can keep paying what they pay then pay more in taxes to fund the system even more!
The Independent
Parents with young children spend more than one-third of the average salary on nursery school, according to research.
