Latest Experiences With Google Domain Services

I am setting up a domain from scratch for a local educational outfit. Because of the budget - zero - I decided to use Google’s applications for domains. I didn’t use their registration service because if I was going to mess with it for free, I wanted to use a domain service I was already used to.

This service is a beta test, but because my organization was “.org” and “educational” it went right through. Maybe it would do the same for a business,  but who knows? You might leave a comment if you tried that and it went right through.

My probelm came in verifying that I owned the domain.

There are two ways to do that

1. You upload a page with a particular title and snip of Google Code (fastest) - IF you already have a hosting service and you’re just transferring a service or adding Google email. I wasn’t so I couldn’t do this.

2. The other method involves how you set up the CNAME file at your domain registrar. I searched for hours trying to figure out how to do this. Finally I emailed tech support… I’d fogotten to check one pull down window where the CNAME information resided. Frustrating! But it went to show that you CAN do this and, like Google says, it’ WAS available under “advanced options”.

So now I’m in the up to 48 hour updating period where Google checks for this code and decides whether I really own the domain name.

Then I’m off to the races.

I really need to find a nice logo…here’s where I’ll have to spend some money I figure.
