The headline for the article from the Chicago Tribune reads “Home-business rules get tougher”. It’s the article that uses the words “cracking down”. And to be fair to the city, actually Naperville has RELAXED some stipulations on the number of employees who can work at a home business - they’d only allowed one previously.
What they’re cracking down on is activity outside the home related to the business based on complaints about a moving and relocation business operated out of a home that allegedly “endangered the children”. That complaint may be genuine, but it as likely means someone just got annoyed and it’s better to sound concerned “about the children”.
The city also received complaints about a home based accounting operation though too!
There’s got to be some sanity in all this…don’t accountants have a right to work and save money by working at home without the neighbors begrudging them the opportunity?
I couldn’t help but recalling that in the late 70’s by order of a judge Nazi’s were given permission to march in Skokie, IL despite the village’s complaints - but don’t try running a booming home business in Naperville, IL in 2007!
