I personally think these are all pretty good ideas but are they the absolute best for 2007? Perhaps they’re the best for YOU… or perhaps not. In any case, lists are interesting just to see what other people are thinking.
This list is from Businessweek via Alfa Mercado and with some of Alfa’s comments as to how they apply in the Philippines. I’ll add my comments too.
For home business enthusiasts out there looking for new home based ventures, you might want to try the following, whichever interests you, of course:
1. Garage Organizing
In the Philippines, I’m not sure if this would take off easily since not a lot of Filipinos have garages that they’d spend on just to get it organized. But Americans are definitely a good market for this business.
Chuck: Depends on where you are in America. Suburban areas could be good locations to try this when you could get several customers on one block and perhaps even sell other services. Lawn mowing in the Summer, Garage organizing in Spring and Fall.
2. eBay Business
Entrepreneur Philippines mag have already produced an issue that featured a successful Filipino eBay businessman. He resorted to selling old collectors’ item toys. Tips on how to start a home-based eBay selling business here.
Chuck: You can read these articles too.
3. Home-Based Outsourcing Jobs
These include home-based medical transcription or legal transcription, copywriting services and other jobs that can be outsourced for companies to focus on their core competencies. One of those home-based business people doing outsourcing jobs is yours truly.
Chuck: My wife does this too and stays pretty busy. I think good transcriptionists stay in demand but it can be hard to get going.
4. Pet Sitting or Pet Grooming
Michael de Mesa, though is not doing it out of his home is successful with his pet sitting business K9 couture. A similar business maybe in the form of a pet hotel like theBunnery might be given a chance in the Philippines, too.
Chuck: Where I live we can these people “relatives” and that’s what they call us when we feed their dog while they’re on vacation.
5. Home-based scrapbooking
If you’d check out greeting cards sections in shops you’ll see that the scrapbooking supplies section is starting to include more and more varieties of scrapbooking tools. It’s because of the growing popularity of scrapbooking. The December issue of Entrepreneur Philippines mag featured scrapbooking as a business.
Chuck: I suggest that the best place to market a scrapbooking business isn’t the scrabbook supplies… but the photo developing section of the store. Cut the store owner in on a slice of the revenue to get them to advertise and take orders for you to organize and scrapbook photos of weddings, vacations, etc. for the folks who take photos but then never do anything with them. They keep your retail price list, collect the money for you, and keep their cut - paying you when you drop off the finished product. You could set up several of these across town to stay busy if you’re good. Make a 3 ring binder with sample layouts sort of like Wal Mart has a binder in the bakery section about sample cakes.
6. Art tutoring for kidsThe number of home-based or online tutor jobs being offered is growing lately. Businesses that has something to do with education made more accessible are predicted to gain more success this year.
