Britain’s Most Gullible Town? 1 In 10 Scammed

As I’ve been scanning the work at home news in 2007, I’ve seen the same old tired articles warning about “Top Work At Home Scams”… you know “envelope stuffing” etc.

I usually write these off as the journalistic equivalent of telling adults who should know better not to put their hand near the flame or to not run with scissors.

But then we come across and article like this from Metro.co.uk and I remember an old saying attributed to P.T. Barnum I think… it goes something like this “Nobody ever went broke underestimating the stupidity of the American Public.” I guess that goes for Britain too.

Residents of Oldham have staked their claim as the most gullible people in Britain – after losing £13m to marketing scams last year.

More than one in ten people in the Greater Manchester town, some 11,000, were fooled into handing over money.

That works out at £80 per adult being duped by premium rate phone lines, foreign lotteries and pyramid selling.

According to the Office of Fair Trading, about 6.5 per cent of adults in Britain fall victim to marketing scams each year, meaning Oldham is almost double the national average.
