As many as 20% to 30% of English Speaking immigrants to Israel never work for local employers. Instead they commute or – increasingly – telecommute according to Haaretz.com.
What jobs are they doing instead of blending into the local economy? Marketing, editing and graphic design according to unofficial guesstimates.
This is great for the immigrants because they know in advance that they will have income in their new home, but it’s hurting local employers who need talented help but can’t keep up with the pay scale required by these professionals.
The trend is likely to continue…

Update: since the dollar is currently so low, this arrangement has begun to lose some of its lustre, especially for immigrants that have been in Israel for a few years already and have picked up the language. But it’s still a great way to make the move and ease the transition financially…
