$44,000 Per Year For Health Insurance?

Members of the Screen Actors Guild are insured by Cigna… the company has actually proposed charging them $44,000 per year for health insurance USA Today reports.

Under the new rates, the most expensive plan in California will cost a family $3,685 a month, $44,220 a year. Less-expensive HMO plans will cost families $24,624. In New Jersey, an HMO will cost $10,260 a year for a single person and $30,372 for a family.

Probably if this were happening to any other employee group, there might actually be some sympathy. As it stands with stars getting millions of dollars per show, most people won’t care. There’s just the impression that these people check into a 28 day, $50,000 drug rehab programs in the Bahama’s whenever they want to avoid jail time for driving under the influence.

Cigna confirms this gut reaction that most people have by saying that this group’s costs are double any similar group that Cigna covers.

This story adds fuel to the fire regarding rising costs for American families. They make politicians believe (falsely) that they can actually do something to help the situation by trying to “help”.
