Entrepreneurship in Charityland

Could it be that the self employment you seek involves providing a charitable service?

J.T. Houk, CEO of the National Heritage Foundation likes to say that “for every hurt, there’s a helper”.

In the essay “Entrepreneurship in Charityland” he posits that quite possibly the “new frontier” of entrepreneurship is not in manufacturing or elsewhere but in the charitable sector providing “charitable, educational, scientific, and/or religious activities”.

Charitable Entrepreneurship is Just Like Ordinary Entrepreneurship It is just like what you understand as Entrepreneurship. A person with a “profitable? idea convinces others to invest. When there is enough money, the entrepreneur is encouraged by the stockholders to begin spending the investments so that there can be a profit and a dividend paid back to them. A person with a “charitable? idea convinces others to donate. When there are enough donations, the charitable entrepreneur may now take a salary and begin the charitable program that she has designed. The returns to the donor are not in the form of dividends, but the joy of giving, the tax deduction and the feeling of doing good.
