The International Herald Tribune ran a column on how would be telecommuters can arrange with their boss to work from home.
Here’s some of the more salient points…
1. Know if working from home is a good fit for both YOU and the type of work you do. If you’re a surgeon needing an operating room, working from home probably isn’t an option.
2. When asking emphasize how it helps the business, not just (or even) how it helps you.
3. It can’t hurt to make a professional proposal… you would do that for a client, why not your boss who’s your “client” in this case.
4. Remember that your boss needs to prove how productive his team is so you actually need to be better about documenting your productivity when working from home.
