Updated Update: This was originally posted in 2006. As I note in a comment below, things have changed since it was originally posted. When you find a resource mentioned that is two years old regarding internet marketing you should especially make due diligence into current viability. We state this in our disclosure policy under “about” but wanted to mention it again.
Update: Check out this free advertising resource too…
Don’t expect to get rich on free advertising. It happens to be sure, but why bank on it?
But it doesn’t hurt to put out those free ads if it means that your hundred ads at a hunderd different site point back to your business website. Even if no human eyeball sees it, sooner or later the search engines will find your site and, with perseverance, you will get some business trickling in.
Note: this is advice for the part time home based workers who want to dip their toe in the and “boot strap” their business. If you have capital to invest, you can still use such a strategy but there are other much faster ways to get up and running. This is for folks with time and not money, ok?
One of those strategies is the FREE ADVERTISING BLOG with enough referrals, you can get the search engines reminded of your website and business automatically. Every little bit helps.
If you can get a network of people and make sure everyone gets at least a few referrals to get advertising credits it could work well for lots of people.

This Idea of Free Advertising Blog is really interesting. That is where I got my idea to start one for my own. It’s just a week old and already indexed in Google and lots of spiders are crawling it. My Blog is http://www.3stepads.com. It has no referral program and i think, it will not have one, because there are no limitation in how many ads users can post (exept rules).

Juri

This site was incredibly frustrating and in the end, didn’t help at all. It’s bum steer in my opinion.
On arriving and choosing to register to place ads there, one gets a video where a “one time offer” you are “never going to get again” to purchase their stuff is given. When you choose not to, you are then sent to a page where you are again, presented with a video saying that because you didn’t take the offer, obviously it’s too steep. So they make you *another* offer… again, telling you it’s a one time thing. If you click that link for more information, you’re sucked into a a loop of another site with an offer to purchase stuff again, and if you try to close the window, a chat box pops up with a “representative” asking you why you’re trying to go and trying to convince you to take the offer. If you again decline the offer, you are then allowed to the “members area” so that you can post a free ad. You are made aware that unless you purchase an upgrade, you will only have access for 7 days.
So ok… you think 7 days is still free ads, so you’ll see how it goes. You try click your links to the areas where you can access your account (that you are now near wishing you hadn’t done) so you can post an ad, but nothing loads. You sit and wait, and wait and wait and never get anywhere. Finally, you give up and close the window, sure that you should not have registered there and knowing you wouldn’t have had you not seen it on this blog… a blog you thought was respectable and wouldn’t send anyone to these kinds of places.
There’s more.
When searched/checked with online tools, that site does seem to have traffic… but their pagerank is only PR3. So, given that your ad isn’t getting any real googley link juice unless you’re lower than a 3 in rank yourself, your only hope is that you’ll get what they promise (all these extra hits and traffic from your link there) because of the traffic, which for a site like that, isn’t really all that great anyway. One of my own blogs has gotten that many hits at times, and usually does half as well in hits and has almost twice the rank even without their help.
So… this isn’t good. Sending people to sites like this isn’t cool. I just thought you should know… and hopefully care.
And it proves the old adage… there is no such thing as a free lunch… even when you read about one at a blog you thought wouldn’t lie.

The site has changed since making the original post. But as with all posts you really need to do your own due diligence and make your own decisions. At the time it was originally posted “blogs” were the great thing and this was pretty cool. But the landscape has changed since that time.

Thanks for the resources.
And Thanks Fracas for clarifying about that one site. I was going to give it a look but it doesn’t seem like anything I’m interested in now.
I’ve recently started a blog about making money online if you’re interested in giving it a look. It’s just started and has no traffic so I’d really appreciate any traffic I got. I think I might come back to your blog from time to time and see what else I can find though. I don’t think you intentionally posted that bad site and as you said it was more reputable at the time.
Anyway, my blog URL if you want to look at it is:
