Virtual Flop - New Entrants To U.S. Workforce Ill Prepared

There’s lots of buzz about a new breed of virtual businesses which I posted on yesterday, you’d think that Americans were all computer geniuses poised evolve beyond the need to sweat.

Sadly, that’s far from the case.

Instead it looks like instead of turning out High School Graduates with the former designations of “cum laude”, “summa cul laude” and “magna cum laude” we’ll just be switching over to “Dumb” and “Dumber” according to Financial Times.

[Based on recent surveys] nearly three quarters of incoming high school graduates were viewed as deficient in basic English writing skills, including grammar and spelling. Almost 30 per cent said they doubted their college graduate employees could write a simple business letter.

The High School diploma has become so devalued as a predictor of work performance, a new national “career readiness certificate” is being rolled out nationwide to verify that people actually learned something in High School.

If the people who graduate High School need this certificate, what about the ones who couldn’t even get that far? Some of course could obtain such a certificate easily because they’re skilled enough, but hated High School. The rest? Don’t hold your breath…
