Lyn,

I would suggest that you send flyers and letters of introduction to local physicians. (You could also build a free website for your business via geocities.com) On your flyer, you could list your specialities, experience, fees, etc. If you know other MTs, you could also network with them. Additionally, you can find sample business contracts on the internet, and I believe, on MT Daily.

I hope this is helpful.

I am a home based MT, have been for some years now. My medical transcription business grew so much that I was working sometimes 18 hours a day. I have cut way back now to only doing one or two doctors a day. That has given me time to try my hand at having a web site and even blogging. I just started my web site about three weeks ago. I think I will really enjoy it, plus I can keep transcribing also.

Was a stay home MT. Thought I would rather work in-house, but now I wish I had stayed at home. I laughted out loud about the part about actually having to know how to spell medical words. However, an MT also has to know what the words MEAN, and in what context, and medications and what they're for. It is actually our job to catch mistakes a Doc might make in his/her dictation as well. A Good transcriptionist can do that. An excellent one is even more knowledgable and can command up to $35+ an hour. And yes, typing skills are a huge plus.
