Turning Bouy’s Into Birdhouses

During my recent trip, I was amazed by the variety of home businesses I saw as I dodged the interstates in favor of the slower, but more scenic highways.

Starting in Lancaster County Pennsylvania, I noticed an amazing variety of home based businesses. In the next week or so I plan to tell you some of the businesses I ran across.

Today, I want to tell you about a small home business I encountered in Maine on Highway 77 between the Portland Head Lighthouse and the Two Lighthouses State Park.

This home based business has a large antiques sign but also a prominent display along the highway of birdhouses made from old bouys.

Or rather immitation bouys. I don’t know if yesteryear’s supply of bouys no longer exists or whether they don’t make bouys suitable for “recycling” as bird houses.

We purchased one bouy birdhouse made of wood and configured like a lighthouse… $30 and considered that a very vair price. I estimate the cost of paint and wood at $5 or so.
