Home Medical Transcription - Latest Trends

Key boardI was talking to an industry insider in the medical transcription field the other day and she dispelled some common myths.

When people today start thinking about doing Medical Transcription at home or in an office or hospital, there are many who tell them… “that field won’t be around long due to technology”.

The implication is that voice recognition software will do all the work.

My wife and I have tried this with a commercially available product most doctors would run accross seeking a cheap solution.

We ran a NON MEDICAL voice file through it… just everyday language spoken clearly to a large audience.

How much was useable?

None.

It required 100% revision…100% gibberish.

Not only did the software NOT recognize ordinary conversational words, it wouldn’t have picked up a single medical term.

This insider confirmed my limited findings. When asked if voice recognition would eat into the industry, she said “Not in our lifetimes”.

I happen to agree with that.

What may put home medical transcription people in offices? HIPAA and Contractural stipulations that sensitive data be kept 100% in house.  These offices for this national firm are flexible though. Medical Transcriptionist have 24 hour access and can work any time they choose or in a split shift.
