Beware “Guerilla Marketers Wanted” Ad On Craigslist

May 25, 2006 by Chuck | 2 Comments

This ad appeared in Nashville, TN when I saw it.

To find out more about this “Guerrila” Marketing company I typed in the email to respond to and for the first few pages only came up with other Craigslist ads when I did a Google search.

It’s as if this company wants bandit signs posted all over the country at $1 per sign.

Maybe they have deep pockets and if they get someone in all 115 Craigslist cities they can fulfill the promise to help you earn $300 per week. That’d be $34,500 per week nationally paying for sign placement PLUS the cost of shipping you the signs but maybe they DO have deep pockets.

Or maybe they don’t and you’ll never get paid.

Remember that in each of these locales, bandit signs are likely illegal.

Since they won’t have your phone number on them you won’t get the call from the city codes enforcement… or will you?

Check the paperwork…will you be required to follow all local laws? And if not (because you didn’t know it’s illegal to put them anywhere in town) will you be the fall guy?

I have lots of issues with such an ad.

While not necessarily crooked, it’s borderline. And that’s assuming you get paid.

If you want to make money between 1 am and 4 am like they say for this job, get a paper route!

I disagree with the opinion that this is “borderline crooked”. In many counties this is not only **not** illegal, but it’s even protected by local freedom of speech laws, though this is certainly not true for most counties that are pro-censorship.

Also, lots of reputable marketing agencies consider signs a viable small part of the big promotional picture (bandit signs are great for branding) and I’m not sure that they like having their service branded as borderline crooked.

Actually I didn’t say it was borderline crooked, you did.

I said it’s legality was questionable due to many local ordinances.

I also questioned whether people would be paid so my complaint isn’t simply the “Bandit Signs”.

But if everything is always on the up and up, why do you call your service “Bandit Signs”?
