Amazon.com has a hit – Internet Movie Database

According to the Puget Sound Business Journal Amazon.com’s Internet Movie Database is a hit… a huge generator of web traffic to the online giant.

Oddly enough, the purchase was relatively long ago and the website has built steam ever since. Only today does it seem like an “overnight success”.

Internet Movie Database was founded in 1990 by Col Needham, a native of Bristol, England, and acquired by Amazon for an undisclosed price in 1998. The Web site offers entertainment news, gossip and trivia as well as movie showtimes, trailers and box office data.

It’s often featured prominently in search results for famous movies and actors. For example, if you type “Angelina Jolie” into Google, the first result that pops up is a profile of the actress on IMDb.com. The profile contains Jolie’s complete filmography, with links to reviews and information about those films.
