Screening Employees For Cultural Fit – Another Reason To Work At Home

April 19, 2006 by Chuck | 0 Comments

In this post on screening employees for cultural fit, Jeff Cornwall is talking about the corporate culture… as entrepreneurs who are growing any business (even my wife’s home business which just had to sub contract some work)… you want someone to help, not drag you down.

The most common culprits are the attorneys and CPA’s we hire who are preoccupied with racking up a bill for you to pay pronto even though they don’t know as much about your business as they need to and make serious mistakes.

In the last month, I’ve dealt with 2 separate “professionals” who made glaring errors that could have cost thousands of dollars had I not checked every line of work. Heck they still may cost me big money.

But did they want to get paid pronto despite their idiocy? Heck yes.

Do I have any recourse except hiring a lawyer and suing the heck out of them? Even then not really.

Heck, one of them WAS an attorney.

Cornwall advises tests like how potential hires who suck up to you treat waiters and other people to whom the potential hire feels superior. If they’re nice to everyone, they’re more likely to get the job.

But some cultural screening in big corporations these days is not for character or competency but to promote their wacko agenda.

Before my wife and I married, she got a new job in a medical office locally.

The person hiring her understood that she as a newlywed didn’t want to work 100 hours per week for 40 hours pay (who would, newlywed or not?)

In the hiring process this person claimed to agree with my wife’s terms.

Upon hiring what this person really wanted was 2 things… a patsy for all the failures at the office which were her doing through micromanagement and a suck up who’d run to this woman with every little problem so this woman’s inflated ego could get inflated some more.

To top things off, she was one of these people who told folks she based her hiring and firing decision on what “God” told her… though I suspect it was the idol named “Koveryourbutt” rather than any diety acknowledged by a major religion.

So in my wife’s case, she was screened and somehow passed a suck up test but when she didn’t suck up enough, she was used for her second role… scapegoat for the “Practice Manager’s” foul ups.

Some people get tired of all the politics and political correctness and that’s why lots – like my wife – are turning to self employment.
