Recently, legislation attempting to solve problems due to illegal immigration crashed and burned in the Senate for reasons - allegedly - of partisan politics.
I think that’s good for small business and home business because it’s the small operations who are in my opinion most likely to get hurt.
You see, some advocates are calling for sanctions on businesses who hire illegals.
Small and home based businesses are the LEAST able to “police” the issue.
Well crafted forgeries in the age of high tech computer equipment should easily be able to produce documents that the average mom and pop operation have no ability to distinguish from fraud.
And when it comes to defending themselves in court should they be prosecuted, it is illegal to copy social security cards (for example) to defend themselves by citing why they believed it to be authentic.
Huge corporations like Wal-Mart can create “collapsible” or “throw away” corporate shells to hire “questionable” employees for sub contract work like store cleaning as they have done in the past and when questioned, it’s the subsidiary that is at arm’s length legally that takes the hits and is designed to be “expendable”. Since they can save megabucks this way, no big deal to them.
Policing illegals is best done by… police.
Entrepreneurs and small business shouldn’t have to assume this government function simply because politicians are too weak willed to do so or want to plead ignorance by making business people do their dirty work.
