Beware This “Patriotic” Email Scam

G.I.Joe Action Figure
By now you’re familiar with email scams where they need YOUR bank account to process a transaction.

Some forlorn prince from Nigeria offers you a huge commission just for cashing his check and sending him back one.

But the prince’s check bounces and yours doesn’t so your bank account is doubly whacked.

There are variation in how this plays out but the end is the same… your bank account gets doubly whacked.

The new variant showing up in my email box today has a patriotic spin.

It’s not the forlorn prince from Nigeria this time.

It’s sergeant G.I. Joe (the names vary and may be stolen) from Camp LeJeune who needs help with a transaction because he’s in Afghanistan or Iraq and normal channels won’t work fast enough.

Here are the clues…

1. You never met sergeant G.I. Joe before.

2. the mail comes in html format - common with spammers to hide their tracks

3. it sounds like the same deal offered by the forlorn prince from Nigeria except it’s in US camouflage and is banking on your patriotic sensibilities

Dont’ worry … the end is the same… your bank account gets doubly whacked!
