At the workforce development meeting I went to, I learned that most folks starting their own business end up juggling a wage earning position AND their business.
This college drop out is an example.
At 18, just back from an experience as an exchange student in Ecuador, this young man found college boring… completely irrelevant to his desire to start a business.
So he went to work for a national company selling cellular phones.
He earns $12.65 per hour + commissions, has benefits, paid time off, and a pension plan.
But that wasn’t enough.
He wants his own business.
His unique skill?
While in Ecuador, he learned how to reprogram cell phones from the US to work on the local cell system.
At Cingular he get’s all the returned phones for free.
He only has to sign a statement saying he won’t resell them in the US.
He reprograms them for Ecuador.
He packs 100 in his suitcase and either flies down there for fun to see old friends or sends them some other way.
Either way, he grosses $3,000 per month.
Recycled phones from America are better quality than the NEW phones being sold there.
So he can sell all he gets.
He’s a one man operation now… but by expanding, he could still produce $10,000 per month and keep his day job!
Go drop out!
What do you know how to do?
(Hey, maybe that’s what they do with all these recycled phones…)
