Bakersfield.com (free but totally annoying registration required) reports that Frances Jones will turn 100 on Wednesday.
What brought this to my attention is that the person who does her hair is Gladys…
She runs a home based beauty salon in Bakersfield - but she’s only in her 90’s.
Frances studied cosmetology at Fresno State University and at the Chicago College of Beauty. A lengthy career as a beautician included working for Malcolm Brock, founder of Brock’s Department Store in downtown Bakersfield.
“I worked all over the store,� Frances said. She started as a clerk and later sold “more expensive stuff� on the second floor. She even worked in the basement with her mother-in-law at a hem-stitching machine.
But Frances ultimately worked in the beauty shop at Brock’s, alongside longtime friend Gladys Ballard. Gladys, in her 90s now, still has a home business beauty shop, which Frances has visited many times.
