Mailbox: Did you really want to tutor kids?

Here’s a letter from Kathy about a tutoring article…

Chuck… did you REALLY want to tutor kids?

Yes. I thought about it. I have done in home work with “troubled youth” on a contract basis, but wanted to deal with people who were more motivated and who would come to me to cut down on travel time.

But then I just got too many irons in the fire. I also wondered at the time how much money could be made because I’m in a rural area. I now know that Sylvan charges $45 per hour! Private tutors are charging $20. So if $35 per hour for your time is enough for you (the target I’d charge to under cut Sylvan at first) then maybe you can make enough. At that rate I’d want to tutor about 100 hours a month to supplement what I was doing otherwise.

Also, to answer an implied question, none of the links I posted were compensated in any way. I posted them because I found them interesting. But please do your own research before buying into anything. All the tutoring systems have a high buy in price. Any system that teaches you to help students… and there are several such franchises… costs big.

When considering one, ask for references in towns your size and see what the people say.

I hope that helps.

Chuck

Note: I will post these response as time allows. Also, I will have to feel your question is a legitimate one and of general interest to other readers.
