I’m headed to prison.
To talk to 2 pre-release groups next Thursday.
They were on lock down at the prison because of some stabbings earlier this week.
Hopefully things will calm down next week.
So what would you tell a guy who’s probably never had a father, a positive example, etc. about how to restart their life?
Most have places to live and jobs lined up.
But for them, big money was what the drug dealers earned.
They can’t envision and upper middle class (or middle class) life without the earning power of dealing.
So what would YOU tell them?
I’m listening…

Here’s another comment sent by email…
Regarding your Prison visit - There are no “Quick Solutions” and there are no “Easy Answers.”
Changing one’s life can be done in one of two ways.
1. The Adhesive Approach - Find a tool or technique and make yourself the SLAVE of that tool or technique.
2. The Cohesive Approach - Change who you are on the inside.
The Adhesive Approach produces quick but superficial results. The Cohesive Approach is Slow, Frustrating, Statistically Improbable but produces very deep results.
One of the best books that are available on changing who you are on the inside is Blaine Lee’s “The Power Principle: Influence With Honor.” Unfortunately, many people find it difficult to apply what is found in this book because they have no mentor and are unacquainted with corroborative Role Models. For example: Blaine Lee describes the positive influence which a good parent has upon their children. But What if you have never had a good parent? Then it becomes difficult to “relate” to what Mr. lee is saying in his book.
If you have never read my blog at CohesiveIntegrity.com - I recommend that you start with November 2005 and read your way through the articles. There are less than 40 articles.
You might also read Adrian Savage’s “The Coyote Within” and “Slow Leadership” blogs.
I also provide a feed of good articles from around the “blogosphere” on Character at http://feeds.feedburner.com/readingassignment/

What can you tell them? First life is not all about fast cars and money. If they have really learned anything they will know this as soon as they leave the prison gates. The first time they can open and close a door, listen to birds singing, smell fresh cut grass, smell the salt air of the sea… it’s something we all take for granted and shouldn’t. It’s called FREEDOMMMMMMM.

And my comment:
“I’ve actually been struggling with this for over a year now. We have an open adoption with my son’s birth father, who has spent most of his son’s life in jail. He knows he needs to make changes but he just can’t seem to do it. He is a very nice guy and really good with kids. I’ve observed that he does great when he’s in jail. I suspect that it’s because the environment is structured and access to mind altering chemicals (alcohol for him) is limited.
I’ve realized that different folks go to jail for different reasons. Some are angry people and they need to confront their anger. Others have little self-control and need to move from jail to an outside structured situation. I don’t think any of their situations are simple; few have a solid support infrastructure or the psychological tools they need to pull it all together. I don’t think there is anything you can say that will reach all of them. I would suggest that you pick something you can speak passionately about and that you think will help someone then present that.
I personally believe that the best way to help folks in jail is to help them before they get there. Please blog about your presentation I’m looking forward to finding out how this goes.”
Is there a reason for the post not accepting comments?
Thanks,
Kim Greenlee

Hi,
I happened upon this post when I was looking for info about Tom Spinks. I’m very interested that you’re helping prison inmates. Good for you!
