Phishing… the attempt to steal your personal information and loot your bank account through sending fraudulent emails… is becoming a daily event.
Fraudsters buy a million emails and send out an email under the name of a major financial institution and – chances are – somebody’s dumb enough to log on so their back account can be looted.
But here’s a simple reminder that will help you remember NOT to log on.
When was the last time your legitimate financial institution contacted you in ANY fashion?
Even a monthly statement…
It was because the WANTED or had already TAKEN your money.
They were offering you disability insurance on your outstanding credit balance.
They were offering you some credit watch service.
Or they’re pitching some AAA like travel plan.
They might – rarely – have called to question a potentially faudulent charge, but only because they feared THEY’d be out money in the long run.
Really, did any big financial institution give a rip about whether you can log on to your account?
Give me a break!
The more uncirculated money in their coffers, the greater profits for them!
So basically, if you get an email that’s not trying to get more money out of you, it can’t possibly be your bank or credit card company!
My rule of thumb then is this…if they act concerned, you’re about to be burned.
