Should You Use TinyUrl links in your ezine?

November 21, 2005 by Chuck | 8 Comments

I have an ezine where I send out a link to what I consider my best posts here and on the web.

One of my readers unsubscribed because of them.

Here’s what she said…

Using compressed URLs (like tinyurl.com) is a sign of fraud or dishonesty or just plain distrust of your newsletter subscribers. So I decided not to waste my incoming email bandwidth on your newsletters.

Actually the reason I used them is because the web links to individual posts on this blog can be very long so I wanted the link to work.

I was shocked by the suspicion caused by a contracted link.

But to associate them with fraud?

I conclude that “all looks yellow to the jaundiced eye” to borrow a phrase from some otherwise forgotten literature class long ago.

How do you react to contracted links… or tracking links in an ezine?

I didn’ t bother sending them my reasoning. I did think of a quote allegedly from Einstien…

The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has limits…

Hello Chuck and Dane, My name is Michele and I was looking at your web-site and see we are in similar fields, but, because the Internet is so BIG we probably could go right though life and never run into each other! Now I’ve gone and messed all that up with this email! Just kidding, but bare with me.

I also notice you are building your own email list (as we all are) and was wondering if you would be open to a Joint Venture proposal that could expand your list considerably without you having to do anything more than you are already doing?

At this point I must tell you this is no sales gimmick and I am being perfectly serious in that I could help you build your email list without you having to run around and waste your time or spend any money in the process.

If you want to hear more about this please go and take a look at what I am offering a few other webmasters/listbuilders at my site at: http://www.prosperityatlast.com/listpro — if you like what you see please leave your name and email address and I’ll come back to you as soon as I can.

    Kind regards

    Michele Brooks
PS I believe that less than one in twenty (1/20) emails are worth following up. I also believe this is one of them!!!
