How To Test A 20 Page Sales Letter For 40 Cents

October 18, 2005 by Chuck | 0 Comments

Have you ever heard the old copywriter’s saying “The more you tell, the more you sell?”

When I was publishing a print newsletter, our sales letter was 8 pages of text plus an order form.

It pulled pretty well… I just couldn’t get enough names to mail to.

When you start your own business, you are automatically promoted to “chief copywriter and ad guru” whether you’re any good or not.

The only way to improve results is test, but direct mail tests CAN be expensive.

You may have to split test mailing a thousand pieces each of 2 different sales letters that vary at only ONE POINT…. a headline… an offer… a guarantee, etc. to see if one approach gives dramatically improved results (at best).

Real pro’s even try this on their Yellow Page ads… the “main” Yellow Page book in the area carries their “control ad”… the one known to work best.

The “alternative” Yellow Page ad carries a test that rings to another line entirely to see if it outperforms the “control”.

But Yellow Page ads can be expensive too….hundreds or thousands of dollars per month. But Yellow Page ads don’t let you test “long copy”.

So where’s a great way to test Long Copy before you spend money mailing it to your prospects?

Ebay!

For the cost of an auction (40 cents) you can test a long copy ad.

Here’s the results Glenn Osborn has been getting:
