Dennis Bevers describes what happend on Sowpub.com:
Someone already posted my answer – diversification.
My home-based business sustained a direct hit from Hurricane Rita. Two weeks w/o electricity to my office, and 12 days living out-of-town. The phone company has advised it will take another 4 weeks before they’ll re-connect my phone/fax/internet lines to my house.
I’ll survive because I diversified in multiple ways.
1. Diversified my customer base –
a. Geographically – I serve a large customer base spread across 8 parishes (think counties) of SW Louisiana, as well as across the US via the internet.
b. Industrialy – I serve several diverse industries, including healthcare, financial, chemical mfg, retail, commercial, gov’t, and “Mom & Pop” businesses.
c. Product-wise – I only work with one distributor, but through them have access to over 4000 national and international suppliers, offering nearly 800K different items, ready to carry a name/logo, etc, for long-term exposure.
d. Multiplying my success – Back in college business classes we were taught to duplicate our success through training others to do what we do. I have built a large group of sales associates, and am rewarded with a portion of the profits generated by their sales. While my income will suffer from lower commissions for the next 60 to 90 days, my associates are scattered from Coast to Coast across the US, which provides residual, passive income to us.
