Did you know that many archaic laws make working from home “against code” and subject you to fines and other penalties if not criminal convictions?
Paradise Valley AZ is reevaluating it’s stance on home based businesses.
One resident of the town complained to the planning and zoning commission that home based busiensses had caused a significant increase in traffic on her residential street.
It leaves one wondering… in a “Three strikes your in prison for life” state if 3 such violations for “felonious entrepreneurship” could actually cause one to be locked up for life?
That only sounds stupid. We’re talking about politicians who sign laws they don’t even read, remember?
If you’re a home based business person in this little burg, watch out. There may be trouble soon in Paradise! (Sorry, I’m a punaholic!)
Here’s another story about how a taxidermist had to get approval of his town council to work at home.

I have a neighbor who just ratted on me to local building inspector about home business I run here in suburban NYC town. The authorities are reluctant to press the issue and want to look the other way but neighbor but is insisting that I remove my business from my home. I have an office, a secretary/asst, and some of my kid’s friends who do light product assembly and packaging after school. The only exterior disruption to the neighborhood is 1-3 Fedex/UPS pick-up/deliveries a day which total 15 minutes max. of truck activity on street (where some eBay shopping nuts get regular deliveries too). Has anyone faced a similar issue? Does anyone know of any resources regarding this issue that I might tap into?

Steve, usually the issues involve…
1. Difference between a home based occupation and a home based business. Yours might be in a gray area.
2. Other related issues include “impact”. Do you have an inordinate amount of traffic to your home like tractor trailers, customers etc. that conceivably affect the neighbors or cause some other impact? From what you’ve said it sounds minimal.
This boils down to what your particular code says or doesn’t say.
You need to read it and see.
You may need to get a lawyer I’m sorry to say.
